Indonesia: Supporters of President Joko Widodo plan to rally at the Proclamation monument in Jakarta Sept. 22
Pro-Jokowi rally to occur in central Jakarta, Indonesia, Sept. 22. Tight security, transport disruptions likely; clashes possible.
Supporters of President Joko Widodo affiliated with the Pasukan Berani Mati Pembela (PBMP) group plan to rally at the Proclamation Monument along Jalan Proklamasi, Jakarta, Sept. 22. The action is a display of support for the outgoing president in the lead-up to the Oct. 20 inauguration of President-elect Prabowo Subianto. Although organizers claim up to 20,000 people will attend the event, actual attendance will likely be lower and may reach up to several hundred people. Activists typically gather from late morning through the evening. Unannounced gatherings at or processions from popular protest sites like the Arjuna Wijaya Horse Statue and the Merdeka Presidential Palace are possible.
Increased security measures will likely occur around protest sites, including the deployment of security personnel and the imposition of traffic restrictions such as security cordons, diversions, and road closures. Clashes may occur, especially if police attempt to disperse demonstrators trying to bypass security barriers. Acts of violence such as arson, vandalism, and altercations with rival groups may occur. Any notable violence could prompt localized business disruptions.
Transport disruptions are probable near rally sites, mainly along Jalan Proklamasi, especially if activists block or march on roads. Congestion on access roads to Jakarta and public transportation is possible as attendees reach and leave the venue.
Avoid the rally site as a precaution. If violence occurs, leave the area immediately for a secure, nongovernment building. Allow additional time for travel to nearby destinations; do not navigate roadblocks. Monitor trusted local media for gathering updates, as organizers may not announce them in advance. Heed all local security and traffic advisories.
