Kenya: Teachers' union calls off strike following negotiations with authorities Sept. 3 /update 2
Public school teachers in Kenya to resume work following negotiations with authorities Sept. 3.
The Kenyan Union of Post-Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) has announced that its members will resume work from Sept. 3. This follows an agreement with authorities, with the latter assenting to some demands; both parties have agreed to continue negotiations. The week-long strike began on Aug. 26 despite a court order suspending the work stoppage. The union was demanding the promotion of some public school teachers and other issues. Related protests were reported in Bungoma, Eldoret, Kisii, Mombasa, and Nairobi during the strike.
Further minor gatherings and disruptions are possible near government buildings.
