Lebanon: Labor union calls for nationwide general strike Sept. 18 to denounce Israeli attack

Labor union calls for general strike across Lebanon Sept. 18 to denounce Israeli attack. Associated protests possible.

Warning

The General Labor Union has called for a nationwide strike Sept. 18 to denounce the Israeli attack targeting wireless communication devices belonging to Lebanese Hizballah (LH) members. The attack killed at least nine people and wounded approximately 3,000 others. While organizers have yet to announce specific times and locations, demonstrations are possible during the strike period. Popular gathering sites include public squares, major thoroughfares, and foreign embassies.

Disruptions to business operations are likely, particularly if the labor action is prolonged. If protests materialize, localized transport disruptions are possible near demonstrations in urban centers, especially if protesters march along or block roads. Clashes between police and protesters cannot be ruled out, particularly if demonstrators are overly disruptive or ignore police orders to disperse.

Confirm business and transport arrangements in Lebanon Sept. 18. Monitor local media for details concerning protest activity, as organizers may not announce plans in advance. Avoid all demonstrations due to the potential for clashes. Immediately leave the area and shelter in a secure, nongovernment building if violence erupts. Allow extra time to reach destinations in the affected area. Heed the advice of security personnel.

A series of explosions targeting wireless communication devices occurred across Lebanon Sept. 17, including in the LH stronghold of Dahieh, areas near the border with Israel, and Beqaa Governorate. Initial reports claim that Israeli authorities hacked into LH's communication network to detonate the devices. Among those killed is the son of an LH member of Parliament. According to Lebanon's Ministry of Public Health, around 170 people are in critical condition.
