Madagascar: Opposition movement to hold political rally in Tanjombato, Antananarivo, Sept. 21
Opposition movement to hold political rally in Tanjombato, Antananarivo, Madagascar, Sept. 21. Likely increased security, possible violence.
The Firaisankina opposition movement and the Tiako I Madagasikara (TIM) opposition party plan to hold a political rally in the Tanjombato area of southern Antananarivo on Sept. 21. The meeting follows the announcement that the National Independent Electoral Commission (CENI) had denied former president and Firaisankina's candidate, Marc Ravalomanana, the right to contest Antananrivo's municipal election in December. Opposition supporters plan to gather at the Magro Mall in Tanjombato from 10:00; authorities have reportedly approved the rally.
Increased security is likely in the vicinity, causing localized travel disruptions. Protests and counter-protests are possible. Clashes between political supporters of rival candidates or with security forces cannot be ruled out if attendees refuse to comply with police orders.
Avoid the area due to the possibility of violence. If violence erupts, leave the area immediately and take refuge in a secure, nongovernmental building. Consider taking alternative routes to circumvent the area. Heed the instructions of local authorities. Refrain from publicly discussing politically sensitive topics.
