Martinique: Officials extend curfew measures in parts of Fort-de-France and Le Lamentin through Sept. 26 /update 3

Officials in Martinique extend curfew measures in parts of Fort-de-France and Le Lamentin through Sept. 26.

Warning

Officials in Martinique have extended the nightly curfew in effect in parts of Fort-de-France and Le Lamentin through at least Sept. 26 after multiple incidents of violent unrest in recent weeks. Following the extension, the measure will be in effect between 21:30-05:00 instead of 21:00-05:00. The curfew now also applies to the Sainte-Therese area, which was affected by the recent unrest. Other locations under the curfew include the port complex and areas near the Dillon Hypermarket and La Jambette. Restrictions on the sale of fuel and fireworks are also in place through at least Sept. 30. Officials in Martinique had also banned protests in the municipalities of Fort-de-France, Le Lamentin, Ducos, and Le Robert until at least 08:00 on Sept. 23; however, this measure has not been extended.

Protest activity has decreased since the implementation of the curfew on Sept. 18, but demonstrations and roadblocks remain possible in Martinique through at least late September as demonstrators denounce the high cost of living. In previous gatherings, multiple people were injured amid clashes between protesters and security forces. On multiple occasions, protesters have regularly blocked key routes across Martinique with burning debris, including parts of the Route Nationale 5 (RN5). Gunfire, looting, and arson attacks were reported at several gatherings.

A heightened security presence will likely continue over the coming days. Police may forcibly disperse protests by firing tear gas. The likelihood of clashes will be higher near any protests that materialize through at least Sept. 26 as officials enforce the current security measures. Associated transport and business disruptions are probable. Protests may also disrupt traffic near Martinique Aime Cesaire International Airport (FDF).

As a standard precaution, avoid all protests. Heed the directions of local officials. Plan for localized ground travel delays and business disruptions. Monitor local news sites for developments.
