Mexico: Healthcare workers to protest nationwide on Sept. 13

Healthcare workers, including doctors and nurses, to protest across Mexico on Sept. 13. Medical service disruptions likely.

Warning

Healthcare workers, including doctors, nurses, and paramedics, will protest across Mexico on Sept. 13. The purpose of the action is to denounce the central government's federalization of the public health system and reject the integration of the Health Services of the Mexican Social Security Institute for Welfare (IMSS-BIENESTAR). Participating workers plan assemble at each main IMSS office in every state before staging a series of marches. The protest march in Mexico City will begin at the IMSS office at Paseo de la Reforma 476 at 15:00; demonstrators will then proceed to the Angel of Independence. Simultaneous protests will occur in Baja California, Hidalgo, Oaxaca, Quintana Roo, and Veracruz states; however, organizers have as yet released no details concerning these actions.

Increased security and localized transport disruptions are likely near all IMSS central offices on Sept. 13. While organizers have not specifically called for a labor strike, medical service disruptions are possible due to the absence of medical professionals participating in the protest.

As a standard precaution, avoid all protests. Heed all instructions from local authorities. Reconfirm all medical appointments on Sept. 13.
