Portugal: Activists to demonstrate in Lisbon, Sept. 21 /update 1
Anti-immigrant protest canceled; anti-colonial activists to still protest in central Lisbon Sept. 21. Heightened security likely.
Anti-immigration activists canceled a planned Sept. 21 protest in Lisbon. Activists affiliated with the Chega political party had planned to gather at Alameda from 15:30 to demand immigration restrictions. However, organizers announced on Sept. 19 that they were postponing the demonstration to Sept. 29 as an act of solidarity with those affected by recent wildfires across Portugal.
Anti-colonial activists still plan to protest in Lisbon on Sept. 21. Anti-colonial activists plan to march from Marques de Pombal to Largo Sao Domingos from 15:00. The purpose of the demonstration is to mark the 100th anniversary of the birth of anti-colonial activists Amilcar Cabral. It was not immediately clear how many participants may attend.
Heightened security and localized transport disruptions are likely near the protest. Confrontations between demonstrators and law enforcement officers or frustrated motorists cannot be ruled out.
Avoid the affected area as a standard precaution. Allow additional time if traveling near or between Marques de Pombal and Largo Sao Domingos. Strictly heed all instructions from law enforcement officers. Immediately depart the area at the first sign that any security disturbance may occur.
