UK: Flooding and disruptions ongoing across parts of southern and central England as of early Sept. 24

Flooding and disruptions ongoing across southern and central England, UK, as of early Sept. 24. Disruptions likely to continue.

Warning

Strong winds and heavy rainfall since Sept. 22 has led to ongoing flooding and disruptions to transport and utilities across southern and central England as of early Sept. 24. Parts of Bedfordshire, Northamptonshire, and London in England are flooded. Dozens of properties in Kent, the Home Counties, Hertfordshire, and Bedfordshire are also impacted. Rescue crews responded to around 350 flood-related calls.

Flooding has resulted in numerous road closures, including the A421 in Bedfordshire between the A6 (Bedford) and M1 J13 (Brogborough) through at least Sept. 24 and the A5 in Buckinghamshire northbound between the A421 (Bletchley/Stadium MK) and the A509 (Great Holm) at Milton Keynes. Transport for London has warned that the District, Circle, Metropolitan, Piccadilly, Bakerloo, and Central lines are partly suspended or subject to minor to severe delays. Numerous rail services were canceled or delayed; most services are likely to resume early Sept. 24. Some schools in Bedfordshire and Oxfordshire are suspended.

Environment Agency England has issued more than 35 flood warnings and 90 flood alerts across England. Rising river levels could trigger further flooding in low-lying communities near rivers, streams, and creeks. Urban flooding is also possible in developed areas with easily overwhelmed stormwater drainage systems. Landslides are possible in hilly or mountainous areas, especially where heavy rainfall has saturated the soil.

Authorities could issue mandatory evacuation orders for flood-prone communities over the coming days. Disruptions to electricity and telecommunications services are possible where significant flooding or landslides impact utility networks.

The severe weather will likely contribute to further transport disruptions throughout the region. Traffic and commercial trucking delays might occur along regional highways. Flooding downpours could inundate some low-lying roads in areas with poor drainage. Strong winds might also pose a hazard to high-profile vehicles. Hazardous weather conditions might cause flight delays and cancellations at airports across the affected area.

Disruptions triggered by inclement weather and resultant hazards, such as flooding, could persist well after conditions have improved - it could take days before floodwaters recede and/or officials clear debris. If there is severe damage to infrastructure, repair or reconstruction efforts may result in residual disruptions.

Monitor local media for weather updates and related advisories. Confirm all transport reservations and business appointments before travel. Make allowances for localized travel delays and potential supply chain disruptions where flooding has been forecast. Do not drive on flooded roads. Charge battery-powered devices in the case of prolonged electricity outages.
