Evacuation orders remain in effect for parts of Whitewater Township and Cleves, Ohio, US, on Sept. 25 following a chemical leak.

Warning

Evacuation orders issued by officials in Hamilton County, Ohio, remain in effect Sept. 25 for parts of Whitewater Township and the neighboring village of Cleves due to a chemical leak. Officials called on individuals within an 800-meter (0.5-mile) radius of the railyard to evacuate the vicinity of the incident. Those near the evacuation area have also been asked to shelter in place and keep their windows closed. Reports indicate that schools in the area will remain closed on Sept. 25.

The order was announced after a railcar leaked styrene gas at a railyard located near the intersection of US Route 50 (US 50) and Ohio State Route 128 (OH 128) on Sept. 24. The leaking had stopped as of early Sept. 25. No injuries have been reported. Air quality tests are being carried out in the area.

Heightened security and disruptions to transport and business will likely affect the area until authorities give the all-clear. Officials may expand the evacuation area or close local roads on short notice to ensure public safety.

Avoid the vicinity of the incident site until authorities give the all-clear. Consider taking alternative routes to circumvent the affected area and any disruptions. Adhere to all instructions issued by local officials, including evacuation orders. Individuals not under evacuation orders should consider remaining inside, with doors and windows closed and ventilation systems shut off.
