New York City Police Department (NYPD) officials have confirmed that a gunman injured five people, including two critically, near 301 Eastern Parkway in Brooklyn, New York, New York, on the afternoon of Sept. 2. The shooting reportedly targeted a group of people who had gathered to observe the annual West Indian American Day Parade that was proceeding along Eastern Parkway from the segment of Eastern Parkway between Ralph Avenue and Rochester Avenue toward Grand Army Plaza. Authorities said that the assailant fled the scene following the shooting and there was not an active shooter situation in the Eastern Parkway area as of around 16:30; however, the suspect remained at large. Police set up a security cordon near the parade route following the shooting and have opened an investigation into the incident.

Authorities will likely maintain a heightened security presence in the area as they continue their search for the suspect. Transport and business disruptions will likely affect locations subject to increased security over the coming hours, including along the parade route. Authorities may close local roads and issue evacuation orders on short notice to facilitate their search for the assailant and ensure public safety.
