Bangladesh: Jamaat-e-Islami plans rally at Suhrawardy Udyan monument in Dhaka from 14:00 Oct. 28

Jamaat-e-Islami activists plan rally in Dhaka, Bangladesh, from 14:00 Oct. 28. Tight security and disruptions likely, clashes possible.

Warning

The Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami outfit has called for a rally at Suhrawardy Udyan monument, Dhaka, from 14:00 Oct. 28. The group holds annual gatherings on the day to mark fatal clashes with political rivals during concurrent demonstrations in 2006. Up to a few thousand participants may join the event.

Authorities will likely monitor the gathering and may move to disperse overly disruptive crowds. Clashes between police and activists are possible, especially if activists defy any security curbs. Violent altercations with rival political party supporters, as well as arson and vandalism cannot be ruled out. Localized transport disruptions are probable as demonstrators may march from nearby sites such as the Shahbagh intersection, and Baitul Mukkaram National Mosque. Increased traffic congestion and heightened demand for public transport are likely as attendees reach and leave the venue. Any road blockades will likely exacerbate traffic disruptions in the vicinity. Associated localized business disruptions are likely.

Avoid demonstrations due to the threat of violence. Depart the area at the first sign of any security disturbance. Allow additional travel time in Dhaka Oct. 28. Heed all official transport and security advisories.
