Colombia: Artisanal miners likely to continue ongoing strike in multiple northwestern departments into at least late October

Artisanal miners likely to strike, protests in Colombia's northwestern departments into at least late October. Localized disruptions likely.

Warning

Artisanal and small operation miners will likely continue their ongoing campaign of strikes and protests in several of Colombia's northwestern departments into at least late October. The purpose of the action, which first began in the department of Antioquia on Oct. 21, is to demand that the government formalize the small mining sector, among other reforms. Organizers estimate that more than 30,000 small operation minors are taking part in the work stoppage, with the action impacting the Choco, Cordoba, Bolivar, and Santander departments, in addition to Antioquia. Related protests and roadblocks are likely in affected regions; striking miners in Antioquia have begun demonstrating at the roundabout near Caucasia as of Oct. 21. Similar gatherings will probably occur at locations elsewhere in Colombia's northwest. It remains unclear how long the strike will last.

Localized disruptions to ground transport and business are likely near any demonstrations that may materialize over the duration of the strike. Heightened security is also likely; confrontations between striking miners and police officers cannot be ruled out.

Exercise increased caution if operating in the northwestern departments of Colombia. Avoid all protests and allow extra time to reach destinations in the region; confirm route status before ground travel. Heed the instructions from authorities.
