Colombia: Supporters of President Gustavo Petro to march in multiple cities on Oct. 23

Pro-government activists to march in multiple locations in Colombia on Oct. 23. Heightened security, localized transport disruptions likely.

Warning

Supporters of President Gustavo Petro's administration, including members of the Colombian Federation of Education Workers (Federacion Colombiana de Trabajadores de la Educacion, FECODE), plan to march in multiple cities throughout Colombia on Oct. 23. The purpose of the demonstrations is to show support for national government and to oppose a recent investigation launched by the National Electoral Council (CNE) into Petro's campaign financing during his 2022 presidential run.

While rallies are likely nationwide, the following specific events will probably draw the largest crowds:

  • Bogota: March from Parque Nacional to Plaza de Bolivar starting at 09:00; vigil outside the CNE beginning 17:00

  • Bucaramanga: March from Puerta del Sol to Carrera 15 starting at 14:00

  • Cali: March from Comfandi El Prado to Monumento de la Resistencia starting at 09:00

  • Ibague: Rally at Casa del Maestro beginning 08:00

Additionally, members of the Teachers' Union of Santander Department plan to hold a 24-hour strike on Oct. 23. Events in major cities such as Bogota and Cali could draw thousands of participants. Heightened security and associated transport disruptions are likely near protest areas. Clashes and counter-protests are unlikely to occur but cannot be ruled out.

Avoid all protests as a precaution. Plan for delays and alternative routes if operating in major cities in Colombia on Oct. 23. Heed instructions from authorities.
