Anti-racism activists plan to protest in Paris and Nantes on the evening of Oct. 17. Civil society groups are calling for widespread events in the capital and have announced the start time of 18:00 but are deliberately not formalizing the locations with authorities. Events are likely to place in public squares and at local government buildings.
In parallel, organizers plan two specific events to commemorate the deaths of between seven and 200 Algerians (according to different estimates) in Paris in 1961, from 18:00 on Oct. 17:
Paris: Participants to gather at Pont Saint Michel.
Nantes: Attendees to gather at Place Bouffay.
It is possible that several hundred to more than a thousand attendees will take part in each event.
Authorities will likely deploy heightened security measures near the demonstration venues. Road closures will likely prompt localized transport disruptions. The events will likely pass off peacefully.
Avoid the affected areas as a standard precaution. Allow additional time if traveling near the protest sites. Strictly heed all instructions from law enforcement officers.
