India: Unionized farmers to protest outside chief ministerial residence in Chandigarh from Oct. 18

Farmers to rally near Punjab chief minister house in Chandigarh, India, from Oct. 18. Tight security, traffic curbs likely.

Warning

The Samyukta Kisan Morcha has called for an indefinite sit-in protest outside Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwat Mann's residence in Sector 2, Chandigarh, from Oct. 18. The action is to denounce alleged delays in crop procurement. Organizers claim around 1,000 people will participate. The demonstration may end at short notice if any negotiations with state government officials succeed.

Officials will almost certainly monitor the gathering and may move to disperse crowds if they are unruly or attempt to breach security cordons. Clashes between police and activists are possible. Mass arrests of activists, as well as temporary curbs on public movement and/or mobile internet services, are possible in the event of significant violence.

Activists may hold marches or vehicle processions to the rally site, disrupting vehicular traffic to and from Chandigarh. Vehicular checks and traffic restrictions along access roads to the chief ministerial residence are also likely. Associated localized business disruptions are possible.

Avoid demonstrations due to potential violence. Depart the area at the first sign of any security disturbance. Allow additional travel time to, from, and in Chandigarh during the action. Heed all official traffic and security advisories.
