Lebanon: Adverse weather forecast across the country through at least Nov. 2
Severe weather forecast across much of Lebanon through at least Nov. 2. Transport, business, and utility disruptions possible.
Adverse weather conditions are forecast across much of Lebanon through at least Nov. 2. The Lebanon Meteorological Service has warned that weather conditions are expected to become unstable from Oct. 30, with a drop in temperatures and initially scattered rainfall becoming more intense throughout the day and possibly being accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and strong winds. Heavy downpours could trigger flash flooding and soil erosion, particularly in northeastern areas of the country. Further showers and storms are expected Oct. 31-Nov. 1, with heavy downpours likely over interior parts of the country Nov. 1.
Sustained heavy rainfall could trigger flooding in low-lying communities near rivers, streams, and creeks. Urban flooding is also possible in developed areas with easily overwhelmed or a lack of stormwater drainage systems. Sites downstream from large reservoirs or rivers may be subject to flash flooding after relatively short periods of intense rainfall. Landslides are possible in hilly or mountainous areas, especially where heavy rain has saturated the soil.
Due to the region's arid nature and poor stormwater management in some urban areas, even minor rainfall accumulations could quickly result in episodes of flash flooding. Flooding is possible in streams and wadis (dry riverbeds). Moderate winds and dust storms may precede significant rainfall, though some areas - particularly desert areas - may experience high dust levels without rain.
Floodwaters and debris flows may render bridges or roadways impassable, impacting overland travel in and around affected areas. Ponding on road surfaces could cause hazardous driving conditions on regional highways. Flooding could block regional rail lines; freight and passenger train delays and cancellations are possible in areas with heavy rainfall and potential track inundation. Severe weather could also trigger flight delays and cancellations at regional airports.
Localized business disruptions may occur in low-lying areas; some businesses might not operate at full capacity because of flood damage to facilities, possible evacuations, and employees' inability to reach work sites. Electricity and telecommunications service disruptions are possible where significant flooding, strong winds, or landslides impact utility networks.
Monitor local media for weather-related updates and advisories. Confirm all transport reservations and business arrangements before traveling in the affected area. Seek updated information on road conditions before driving or routing shipments through areas where severe weather is forecast; plan for possible supply chain disruptions throughout the affected areas. Stay away from elevated streams, creeks, and other watercourses that are prone to flash flooding. Do not attempt to navigate flooded roadways. Charge battery-powered devices in the case of prolonged electricity outages.
