Informational

Activists, members of the Centre for Democracy and Economic Development Initiatives (CDEDI), and the Concerned Citizens Timely Voice (CCTV) plan to protest in Lilongwe on Oct. 24. They are demanding an independent inquiry into the accident that killed Vice-President Saulos Klaus Chilima on June 10. Demonstrators planned to gather at the Lilongwe Community Ground from 09:30, before marching through Mchesi and to the Lilongwe district council offices, where a petition will be delivered. It remains unclear if the protest has started.

Increased security is likely where protesters gather and along march routes. Localized ground travel delays are likely. Although unlikely, clashes between demonstrators and the police are possible if participants ignore police orders to disperse or if they are overly disruptive.

Avoid the protest as a standard precaution. Exercise caution near the gathering points and plan for ground travel delays. Heed instructions from authorities.

A military aircraft carrying Vice-President Saulos Klaus Chilima and nine other passengers crashed in the dense forests of the Viphya Mountains, North of Mzuzu, on June 10. The aircraft had taken off from Lilongwe at around 09:17 and failed to land at Mzuzu Airport (ZZU) at 10:02. A preliminary investigation conducted by a German expert group explained that poor weather and insufficient radar coverage may have caused the accident; public opinion has remained suspicious of the incident.
