Namibia: Unionized railway workers plan nationwide demonstrations, Oct. 29

Unionized rail workers to hold demonstrations across Namibia on Oct. 29. Freight, and passenger train disruptions likely.

Informational

TransNamib workers of the Namibia Transport and Allied Workers Union (NATAU) have announced nationwide protests for Oct. 29. NATAU is demanding the removal of TransNamib's human capital executive. Protest locations are unclear; however, gatherings are possible near TransNamib offices and train stations, especially in Windhoek. Union officials have reportedly reassured that demonstrations will be peaceful.

Increased security and localized travel disruptions are likely near all protest locations. Passenger and freight train delays are possible. Violence between security forces and protesters, while unlikely, cannot be ruled out.

Reconfirm rail schedules and travel plans. Plan for traffic, freight, and delivery delays. Allow additional travel time. Avoid all protests as a precaution to minimize travel delays. Heed the advice of authorities; depart the area immediately at the first sign of confrontation.
