Nigeria: Power disruptions ongoing nationwide after grid suffers a second collapse Oct. 15 after some services restored near Abuja /update 1

Power outages are ongoing across Nigeria as of Oct. 15. The Independent System Operator of the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) had reported a substantial decline in power generation across the country since around 19:00 Oct. 14. According to media reports, power in some areas of the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) network around Abuja has been restored. However, the Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDP) which serves parts of Lagos State, announced further power disruptions around 09:17 Oct. 15. The Enugu Electricity Distribution Company PLC (EEDC) has also confirmed outages are impacting Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu, and Imo states. Repair works are ongoing and it is unclear when services will be fully restored.

Disruptions to business and telecommunications, including mobile SMS, voice, and internet services, are likely in areas experiencing blackouts. Transport disruptions will probably affect areas with malfunctioning traffic signals. The power disruptions could also result in the temporary unavailability of essential services, such as ATMs and gas stations. Additionally, blackouts could adversely affect security protocols, including alarm systems and electronic fences; opportunistic criminal activity could increase during electricity outages.
