Tropical Storm Jebi is tracking northeastward across the North Pacific Ocean east of Hokkaido Prefecture, Japan, early Oct. 2. As of 12:00 JST, the system's center of circulation was approximately 628 km (390 miles) east-northeast of Misawa, Aomori Prefecture.
Forecast models indicate that the weather system will weaken as it continues northeastward and makes a close approach to Hokkaido Prefecture, Japan, the afternoon of Oct. 2, Kuril Islands late Oct. 2, and far southeastern Kamchatka Krai, Russia, early Oct. 3. Some uncertainty remains in the track and intensity forecast, and changes could occur in the coming days.
Sustained heavy rainfall could trigger flooding in low-lying areas and those with easily overwhelmed drainage systems. If weather conditions prove hazardous, localized evacuations, flash flooding, and landslides are possible.
