South Africa: Unions plan nationwide strike against unemployment, Oct. 7

Trade union federation calls for nationwide strike against unemployment in South Africa, Oct. 7. Likely protests, disruptions.

Informational

Members of the Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU), South Africa's largest federation of unions, have called for a nationwide strike against unemployment on Oct. 7. COSATU has announced that protest marches will be organized; precise locations and timings are unclear.

Thousands are likely to follow the call for the strike. Protests are especially likely in provincial capitals and large urban areas; locations will likely center around government buildings, party headquarters, or major thoroughfares. Increased security will be deployed to monitor likely rallies. While most marches should be peaceful, peripheral clashes between striking workers and authorities remain possible. The strike could lead to increased employee absenteeism, possibly affecting public services, healthcare, and ground and possibly air travel.

Plan for travel disruptions near protests, including disruptions to public transport, air travel, health, and administrative services. Reconfirm business meetings, travel routes, and medical appointments. Avoid demonstrations that materialize and do not drive through road blockades. Allow additional time to reach destinations in the event of protests. If violence occurs, leave the area immediately and take shelter in a secure, nongovernmental building.
