Informational

A magnitude-4.7 earthquake occurred in the Death Valley area of eastern California at around 01:05 Oct. 25. The epicenter was about 7 km (4 miles) east of Stovepipe Wells, California. The tremor occurred at a depth of about -1.6 km (-1 mile), and light-to-weak shaking was probably felt throughout parts of eastern California and southern Nevada. The earthquake was the latest in a series of minor tremors in the area since the afternoon Oct.24, with five previous quakes between magnitude-2.5 and 4.1 occurring in the past few hours. There have been no initial reports of damage or casualties as a result of the earthquakes; however, significant damage is unlikely. It could take several hours until authorities can conduct comprehensive damage assessments, especially in remote areas. Light aftershocks are likely over the coming days.

Officials may temporarily shut down transportation infrastructure in the tremor zone to check for damage. Minor disruptions could occur during shutdowns, but service will likely resume quickly if no damage is found. Utility outages are possible, particularly near the earthquake's epicenter.

Out of an abundance of caution, consider vacating multistory buildings where shaking occurred until authorities confirm their structural integrity. Monitor and plan for aftershocks.
