Informational

Crews are working to extinguish a wildfire burning in Salem, Massachusetts, as of early Oct. 27. The fire broke in a forested area between Highland Ave and Spring Pond. It has burned around 24-32 hectares (60-80 acres). Though crews have largely contained the fire and extinguished much of it, officials expect it to start up again during the day as winds pick up.

No evacuations have been ordered and officials have stated that none are likely to be ordered in the immediate term. No structures are currently threatened. Authorities have ordered individuals to avoid the area.

Authorities could close routes within the vicinity of the wildfire and order communities to evacuate depending on fire activity and the needs of response operators. Power outages are possible in affected areas. Low visibility from smoke and possible ashfall will likely contribute to traffic delays and congestion in the region.

Heed all evacuation orders. Seek updated information on road conditions if driving in the affected area; road closures and detours will cause increased congestion and delays. Collect essential items - including identification and any important legal and travel documents - in an easily accessible "go-bag." Charge battery-powered devices in the case of prolonged power outages.

Individuals not under evacuation warnings should consider remaining inside well-ventilated, air-conditioned spaces to reduce exposure to smoke. Individuals with chronic respiratory illnesses may be more susceptible to the negative effects of smoke inhalation. Eye irritation is possible; flush irritated eyes with copious amounts of clean water.
