Wildfire response is ongoing in Livingston Township, N.J., US, as of evening of Oct. 26. Evacuation orders are in place.

Warning

Crews are working to contain a wildfire burning in Livingston Township, Essex County, N.J., as of the evening of Oct. 26. The fire broke near Route 10 (Mt Pleasant Ave) and Eisenhower Parkway. It has burned around 28 hectares (70 acres) and is 0 percent contained. At least 45 firefighting personnel are on site battling the blaze and have stopped its forward progression.

Authorities have closed several roads, including Route 10's westbound lane, Eisenhower Parkway, Naylon Ave, Dorsa Ave, and Industrial Parkway. At least 48 structures are at risk, and authorities have evacuated several businesses in the area. Additional evacuations are possible over the coming hours.

Depending on the progression of the wildfires, the status of nearby roads could change over the coming hours and days. Authorities could close additional routes within the wildfire complex and evacuate more communities depending on fire activity and the needs of response operators. Residents' return will probably disrupt traffic flows after authorities lift evacuation orders. Power outages are likely in affected areas. Low visibility from smoke and possible ashfall will likely contribute to traffic delays and congestion in the region.

Heed all evacuation orders. Seek updated information on road conditions if driving in the affected area; road closures and detours will cause increased congestion and delays. Collect essential items - including identification and any important legal and travel documents - in an easily accessible "go-bag." Charge battery-powered devices in the case of prolonged power outages.

Individuals not under evacuation warnings should consider remaining inside well-ventilated, air-conditioned spaces to reduce exposure to smoke. Individuals with chronic respiratory illnesses may be more susceptible to the negative effects of smoke inhalation. Eye irritation is possible; flush irritated eyes with copious amounts of clean water.
