Wildfire response ongoing in Teller County, Colorado, US, as of early Oct. 29. Evacuation orders issued, damage reported.

Warning

Crews are working to contain a wildfire in Teller County, Colorado, as of early Oct. 29. The Highland Lake Fire broke out Oct. 28 near Divide amid windy and dry conditions and spread rapidly before slowing down as temperatures cooled overnight Oct. 28-29. The fire has burned around 39 hectares (97 acres) and is 0 percent contained. At least one structure had been damaged by the fire and a local disaster emergency has been declared in the area. Evacuation orders have been issued for around 700 homes in the vicinity of the fire; evacuated areas include Cedar Mountain North to Golden Bell, Wayward Wind, Snowhill, Aspen Village, Broken Wheel, Alpine View, Beaver Lake Circle, Beaver Lake Place and Star View Trail. Pre-evacuation orders have been issued for other surrounding areas, including several homes along county roads 5 and 51.

Depending on the progression of the wildfires, the status of nearby roads could change over the coming hours and days. Authorities could close additional routes within the wildfire complex and evacuate more communities depending on fire activity and the needs of response operators. Residents' return will probably disrupt traffic flows after authorities lift evacuation orders. Power outages are likely in affected areas. Low visibility from smoke and possible ashfall will likely contribute to traffic delays and congestion in the region.

Heed all evacuation orders. Seek updated information on road conditions if driving in the affected area; road closures and detours will cause increased congestion and delays. Collect essential items - including identification and any important legal and travel documents - in an easily accessible "go-bag." Charge battery-powered devices in the case of prolonged power outages.

Individuals not under evacuation warnings should consider remaining inside well-ventilated, air-conditioned spaces to reduce exposure to smoke. Individuals with chronic respiratory illnesses may be more susceptible to the negative effects of smoke inhalation. Eye irritation is possible; flush irritated eyes with copious amounts of clean water.
