Warning

Authorities are responding to explosions and a fire at the La Salina oil terminal in Cabimas, Zulia State, Oct. 15. Firefighters are at the scene and attempting to extinguish the blaze, which reportedly ignited in a crude oil storage tank at the facility during the early morning hours following a lightning strike. The blasts and fire have reportedly injured at least 18 people and emitted a large plume of black smoke.

Heightened security and disruptions to transport and business will likely affect the vicinity of the blaze until firefighters extinguish it and emergency crews vacate the area. Smoke from the fire may noticeably worsen air quality in parts of the city over the short term. Authorities may close local roads or issue evacuation orders on short notice to facilitate the emergency response and ensure public safety. Additional explosions cannot be ruled out.

Avoid the scene of the fire until authorities completely extinguish the blaze and give the all-clear. Consider remaining indoors if heavy smoke is in your area, especially if you suffer from a respiratory illness, such as asthma, or conditions that lead to increased risk from smoke exposure. Eye irritation is possible; flush irritated eyes with copious amounts of clean water. Adhere to all instructions issued by local officials, including any evacuation orders.
