Australia: Unionized rail personnel to strike in Sydney Nov. 21-24

Rail workers affiliated with the Rail, Tram, and Bus Union (RTBU) plan to strike in Sydney 22:00 Nov. 21-06:00 Nov. 24 against the government's decision not to implement 24-hour train services over the weekend. Inter-city and suburban rail services are expected to end at 20:00 on Nov. 21 to allow trains to return to their base. The New South Wales government has announced plans to arrange increased bus services for school hours and weekend events.

The strike will likely cause significant rail transport disruptions in Sydney Nov. 21-24. Increased congestion is likely on alternative modes of transport. High private vehicle use could lead to traffic congestion on main roads, particularly those heading toward Sydney's Central Business District (CBD). Associated demonstrations are also possible during the strike. Protest activity may materialize at transport hubs, government buildings, public squares, and on major thoroughfares.
