Chile: Unionized airport workers to launch nationwide indefinite slowdown strike on Nov. 15 /update 1
Unionized workers to begin indefinite slowdown strike at airports across Chile Nov. 15. Flight disruptions likely.
Unionized employees of Chile's General Directorate of Civil Aeronautics (Direccion General de Aeronautica Civil, DGAC) plan to launch indefinite slowdown strikes at airports nationwide starting at 08:00 Nov. 15. The move comes on the heels of a one-day work slowdown airport workers staged on Nov. 13, which affected dozens of flights. The purpose of the action is to condemn the government's alleged failure to live up to promises on increased salaries and benefits. The decision to resume and extend the protest follows a failure in negotiations with management on Nov. 14.
Participating workers will not fully walk off the job, but will deliberately work slowly on both air- and ground-sides of airports, which will likely result in flight disruptions. Union members have pledged that the action will not negatively impact airport security, however.
Resulting flight delays and cancellations could extend for several days, even after the protest is lifted.
Confirm flight schedules if traveling via Chile starting Nov. 15. Do not check out of accommodations until onward travel is confirmed.
