Ecuador: Increase security likely after prison riot leaves at least 15 inmates dead, 14 injured in Guayaquil Nov. 12
Increased security, localized disruptions likely after prison riot in Guayaquil, Ecuador, Nov. 12
Increased security and localized disruptions are likely on the north end of Guayaquil following an early Nov. 12 inmate riot at the Litoral Penitentiary that killed at least 15 people and injured 14 others. According to corrections authorities, the prison has been secured and additional military and police personnel have deployed to the area to prevent further violence.
Tight security measures will likely remain in force around the facility over the coming days and could be extended to other parts of the city if retaliatory gang violence should occur outside the penitentiary. Transport disruptions are possible particularly along the Via a Daule (E48) to the north of Guayaquil. Riots at other prisons cannot be ruled out.
Exercise caution near the impacted location. Heed the instructions of local officials. Plan for some road travel delays.
