Adverse winter weather forecast across Ireland through at least Nov. 21. Hazardous travel conditions are likely.
Adverse winter weather conditions are forecast across Ireland through at least Nov. 21. A mix of snow, sleet, and rain is forecast across the country over the coming days, as well as cold temperatures. Snowfall accumulations are possible across central parts of the country Nov. 20, with cold temperatures and icy roads possible across the country. More significant snowfall accumulations are possible in south-central and western regions Nov. 21, with heavy rainfall transitioning into snow and sleet in southern regions and further cold and icy conditions across Ireland. Hazardous travel conditions are likely due to slippery roads and reduced visibility caused by blowing snow. Sporadic power outages are also possible as a result of adverse weather.
As of Nov. 20, Met Eireann has issued the following weather warnings across the country Nov. 20-21:
Orange snow/ice warnings (the middle level on a three-tier scale): Clare, Galway, Limerick, and Tipperary counties Nov. 21.
Orange rain and snow warnings: Cork and Waterford counties Nov. 21.
Yellow snow/ice warnings: Carlow, Dublin, Galway, Kildare, Kilkenny, Laois, Munster, Offaly, Roscommon, Wexford, and Wicklow counties Nov. 20-21.
Yellow low temperature/ice warnings: Across Ireland Nov. 20-21.
Authorities will likely issue new alerts or update/rescind existing advisories as weather conditions change over the coming days.
The winter weather will likely cause ground and air transport disruptions in areas under snow and ice warnings over the coming days. Traffic and commercial trucking delays are possible along regional highways. Difficult and potentially dangerous driving conditions are also likely on secondary and rural roadways in the affected states as maintenance crews prioritize clearing major routes. Authorities could close stretches of highway if driving conditions become too hazardous. Flooding and associated disruptions are also possible in places where heavy rainfall occurs. Flight delays and cancellations are likely due to ground stops and deicing operations at airports in regions where heavy snow and/or extreme cold temperatures are forecast.
Monitor local media for updated weather information. Verify road conditions before driving in areas where heavy snowfall or other adverse winter weather conditions are forecast. Allow extra time to reach destinations and carry an emergency kit and warm clothes if driving is necessary, especially on secondary or rural routes that could become impassable. Plan accordingly for delivery delays if routing shipments by truck through affected areas. Confirm flights. Charge battery-powered devices in the case of prolonged electricity outages.
