A magnitude-6.1 earthquake occurred west of the Noto Peninsula at around 22:47 Nov. 26. The epicenter was about 54 km (34 miles) north-northwest of Kanazawa, Ishikawa Prefecture. The tremor occurred at a depth of about 10 km (6 miles), and strong-to-moderate shaking was probably in the Noto Peninsula and other areas close to the epicenter, as well as moderate-to-light shaking across western areas of Honshu Island. There have been no initial reports of damage or casualties as a result of the earthquake; some minor-to-moderate damage is possible in areas close to the epicenter. It could take several hours until authorities can conduct comprehensive damage assessments, especially in remote areas. Moderate aftershocks are likely over the coming days. The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) has issued warnings advising that slight sea level changes are possible from the Noto Peninsula westward along the Sea of Japan coast.
Officials may temporarily shut down transportation infrastructure in the tremor zone to check for damage. Minor disruptions could occur during shutdowns, but service will likely resume quickly if no damage is found. Utility outages are possible, particularly near the earthquake's epicenter.
