Kosovo: Authorities responding to canal explosion late Nov. 29

Water supply disruptions reported in parts of Kosovo following canal explosion late Nov. 29; power outages possible.

Warning

Authorities are responding to an explosion at the Ibar-Lepenac canal near Varage village in Mitrovica District. There are no reports of casualties. Local sources indicate water supply disruptions in several cities. The canal supplies water to two major coal-fired power plants. The cause of the blast is unclear, though Prime Minister Albin Kurti has deemed this a "terrorist act."

Heightened security measures are likely. Commercial disruptions are possible, especially for companies that rely on large quantities of municipal water for operations. Officials state that nationwide power outages may occur over the coming hours.

If operating in impacted areas, stock up on drinking water and confirm alternative water supplies for business operations. Use only bottled water from reputable suppliers for drinking and hygienic purposes. Water pressure and quality may be poor after service resumes; run taps for several minutes before using water. Minimize nonessential water usage. Charge all communication and portable electronic devices when possible. Unplug electronic equipment that is not connected to surge protectors. Exercise caution when driving in any areas affected by power outages. Ensure that generators are functional and fully fueled.
