Lebanon: Adverse weather forecast to continue across much of the country through Nov. 26
Severe weather forecast to comtinue across much of Lebanon through Nov. 26. Transport, business, and utility disruptions possible.
Adverse weather conditions are forecast across much of Lebanon through Nov. 26, according to the Lebanon Meteorological Service. A low-pressure system accompanied by very cold air masses centered in southwestern Turkey is forecast to affect the region early Nov. 24, leading to heavy rain with thunderstorms, active winds exceeding 85 kph (53 mph), and a noticeable drop in temperatures of at least 8 C (14.4 F). Snow is expected to fall at altitudes of more than 1,700 meters (5,577 feet) and touch 1,000 meters (3,280 feet) Nov. 25, with its effect continuing until noon Nov. 26, where it will gradually recede, but with a frost wave dominating Lebanon through Dec. 1. Rainfall with occasional downpours will be accompanied by thunderstorms, strong wind gusts, and lightning. Downpours may lead to flooding in low-lying areas, and strong winds could cause property damage and power outages.
Sustained heavy rainfall could trigger flooding in low-lying communities near rivers, streams, and creeks. Urban flooding is also possible in developed areas with easily overwhelmed or a lack of stormwater drainage systems. Sites downstream from large reservoirs or rivers may be subject to flash flooding after relatively short periods of intense rainfall. Landslides are possible in hilly or mountainous areas, especially where heavy rain has saturated the soil.
Due to the region's arid nature and poor stormwater management in some urban areas, even minor rainfall accumulations could quickly result in episodes of flash flooding. Flooding is possible in streams and wadis (dry riverbeds). Moderate winds and dust storms may precede significant rainfall, though some areas - particularly desert areas - may experience high dust levels without rain.
Floodwaters and debris flows may render bridges or roadways impassable, impacting overland travel in and around affected areas. Ponding on road surfaces could cause hazardous driving conditions on regional highways. Flooding could block regional rail lines; freight and passenger train delays and cancellations are possible in areas with heavy rainfall and potential track inundation. Severe weather could also trigger flight delays and cancellations at regional airports.
Localized business disruptions may occur in low-lying areas; some businesses might not operate at full capacity because of flood damage to facilities, possible evacuations, and employees' inability to reach work sites. Electricity and telecommunications service disruptions are possible where significant flooding, strong winds, or landslides impact utility networks.
Monitor local media for weather-related updates and advisories. Confirm all transport reservations and business arrangements before traveling in the affected area. Seek updated information on road conditions before driving or routing shipments through areas where severe weather is forecast; plan for possible supply chain disruptions throughout the affected areas. Stay away from elevated streams, creeks, and other watercourses that are prone to flash flooding. Do not attempt to navigate flooded roadways. Charge battery-powered devices in the case of prolonged electricity outages.
