Morocco: Medical workers continue to strike nationwide Nov. 12-13; associated protests possible /update 1

Unionized medical workers striking nationwide in Morocco Nov. 12-13. Disruptions to medical services likely. Associated protests possible.

Informational

The National Health Sector Union Coordination announced the organization of a new nationwide strike on Nov. 12-13 in all public health institutions, excluding emergency and intensive care units, in Morocco. The purpose of the action is to denounce the healthcare reform and demand better working conditions and salaries. While organizers have not announced specific protest sites, demonstrations could occur outside the Ministry of Health in Rabat. Gatherings could also occur outside hospitals, regional health directorates, and public squares nationwide.

The strike will likely reduce non-emergency health services at hospitals; facilities will continue to provide emergency treatment. Increased security and localized transport disruptions are probable near any protests that materialize. Clashes between police and protesters are possible, particularly if the latter are overly disruptive or ignore police orders to disperse.

Confirm all appointments at medical facilities for the duration of the strike. Be prepared for delays at hospitals; call in advance if possible, as conditions will likely vary at different facilities. Allow additional time for travel near likely gathering sites. Avoid all protests due to possible clashes; exercise caution around hospitals, government buildings, and other popular demonstration sites.
