Maori activists likely to continue vehicular rallies, related protests in New Zealand through late mid-November. Disruptions likely.

Warning

Maori activists will likely continue their campaign of demonstrations across New Zealand through at least mid-November. The purpose of the action is to oppose the Treaty Principles Bill. Activists have been staging various demonstrations, including disruptive vehicular rallies and protest marches.

On Nov. 18, demonstrators will gather in Porirua on the North Island. On Nov. 19, a convoy will depart Porirua at 06:00 and travel to Waitangi Park in Wellington, where vehicles will assemble before proceeding to Parliament House from 09:00. The route will take the convoy through Courtenay Place, Manners Street, Willis Street, and Lambton Quay. Activists will rally at Parliament House from 12:00 before returning to Waitangi Park at 16:00. An estimated 30,000 participants are expected to attend the event.

Additional similar gatherings will likely continue in other parts of the country over the coming days. Potential rally sites include prominent government buildings, public squares, and major thoroughfares. Well-attended gatherings are likely to attract tens of thousands of participants.

Authorities will maintain an increased security presence near Parliament House on Nov. 19, as well as near any additional gatherings that may take place. Significant traffic and business disruptions are likely along protest march and vehicle convoy routes. The most significant impact will probably be on main highways and thoroughfares in major cities, particularly Wellington. Public transport could reschedule services or alter routes during the demonstrations. While gatherings will probably remain largely peaceful, clashes remain possible, especially if police use force to disperse protesters and reopen roadways.

As a precaution, avoid all demonstrations. Plan accordingly for significant transport and business disruptions in Wellington on Nov. 19. Seek updated information on planned protests and transport disruptions if traveling in impacted areas. Use alternative routes to circumvent known gathering locations and allow additional time to reach destinations near affected locations. Heed all official security and transport advisories.
