Increased security is likely in Augie Local Government Area (LGA), Kebbi State, through at least mid-November. Authorities have deployed additional security forces across the LGA after an attack left at least 15 dead in the Mera locality on Nov. 8. Officials have attributed the attack to a new armed group called Lakurawa.
Increased security is also likely across the states of Sokoto and Kebbi, where the group is known to operate in addition to other threats such as bandit groups. Localized transport disruptions may impact areas subject to military operations and security measures such as checkpoints. Armed clashes between security forces and armed elements are possible. Further attacks cannot be ruled out.
Consult local security partners on the viability of traveling in Kebbi and Sokoto states. Remain courteous and cooperative if approached and questioned by security personnel. Do not discuss plans and routes publicly. If operating in the area in the long term, vary routes and times of travel and ensure the use of secure transport. Maintain contact with diplomatic representations.
Although details about the group remain limited, Lakurawa reportedly expanded in northwestern Nigeria after the July 2023 coup in Niger that disrupted joint operations carried out by Nigeria and Niger at border areas. According to military officials, the group has provided support and protection to the local population against criminal gangs, also called bandits. Lakurawa may have relations with the Islamic State and attempts to impose radical Islamic rules. Some reports suggest the group has operated in the region since 2018.
