Unionized activists to stage strikes, demonstrations in Peru Nov. 13-15 to denounce heightened levels of crime. Disruptions likely.

Warning

Activists from various public sector unions have planned a 72-hour nationwide strike Nov. 13-15 to denounce heightened levels of criminality and to press the government to take more robust anti-crime measures. Participants include affiliates of the General Confederation of Workers of Peru (Confederacio General de Trabajadores del Peru, CGTP), Single Union of Education Workers of Peru (Sindicato Unico de Trabajadores de la Educacion del Peru, Sutep), and the National Association for the Integration of Transporters (Asociacion Nacional de Integracion de Transportistas, Anitra), as well as merchants at local markets in Lima. Strikes and demonstrations will likely focus on Lima, where activists have reportedly planned several demonstrations. The strike coincides with the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum taking place in Lima until Nov. 16.

Business and transport disruptions, including to truck shipments, are likely nationwide during the actions. Local markets in Lima may be closed. Demonstrations are likely near public squares and government buildings. Heightened security is probable around protest sites. Clashes between demonstrators and police are possible.

Plan for business and transport disruptions Nov. 13-15. Heed the directives of authorities. Avoid protests as a precaution. If clashes occur, immediately take shelter in a secure, non-government building.
