Romania: Activists likely to demonstrate nationwide through Dec. 8

Activists likely to protest in cities across Romania through Dec. 8 presidential election; increased security, transport disruptions likely.

Informational

Activists are likely to protest in urban centers across Romania through at least Dec. 8, when the second round of the country's presidential election is scheduled to occur. As of the evening of Nov. 26, activists had gathered in cities across the country, including Bucharest, Constanta, Iasi, and Timisoara, to denounce Calin Georgescu's advancement to the second round of the election. Demonstration organizers have announced plans to hold daily protests at 19:00 at Bucharest's University Square until the second round occurs; more than 1,000 demonstrators had reportedly gathered at the site on the evening of Nov. 26. Protests in other cities are likely to draw at least several hundred participants.

Demonstrations are likely in central areas of cities across the country. Police will likely deploy near all protest sites to facilitate the demonstrations. Movements by demonstrators or road closures by law enforcement officers will likely disrupt transport near protest sites. Confrontations between demonstrators and law enforcement officers, frustrated motorists, or ideologically opposed individuals cannot be ruled out.

Avoid all protests as a standard precaution. Allow additional time if traveling in central areas of urban centers, particularly in evening hours when protests are more likely to materialize. Strictly heed all instructions from law enforcement officers. Immediately depart the area at the first sign that any security disturbance may occur.
