Heightened security and transport disruption likely in the Tongping area of Juba following gunfire exchanged late Nov. 21. Initial reports indicated that heavy gunfire erupted as security forces attempted to arrest former National Security Service (NSS) chief General Akol Koor Kuc near the Nimule Resort Hotel. During the attempted arrest, a firefight between elements loyal to General Kuc and the South Sudan People's Defense Forces (SSPDF) ensued. The United Nations Department of Security and Safety in South Sudan has confirmed the incident; however, the status of General Kuc remains unclear.
Authorities may implement increased security measures, such as roadblocks and security cordons, which may cause localized congestion in the area. Additional confrontations cannot be ruled out over the coming hours.
Avoid the area near the Nimule Resort Hotel and seek alternative routes to circumvent the impacted area. Heed instructions from the security forces.
