Unknown assailants reportedly attacked a group of gold miners near Sarigor in the southern Khatlon Region overnight on Nov. 17-18. One Chinese national was killed in the attack, and five others, four of which were also Chinese nationals were injured. Reports indicate that attackers crossed Tajikistan from Afghanistan, though it was not exactly clear what motivated the attack.
Authorities may maintain a heightened security posture near Sarigor in the coming days. There is a moderate threat of terrorism in the country; authorities typically maintain an increased level of security along the southern border in the Khatlon Region. Nonetheless, cross-border attacks remain a risk along the Afghanistan-Tajikistan border.
