Uganda: Protests possible in coming days, notably in Kampala, following arrest of opposition figure on Nov. 16
Protests possible in coming days across Uganda, especially Kampala, after arrest of opposition figure on Nov. 16. Avoid all protests.
Protests are possible nationwide in the coming days, particularly in Kampala, after authorities arrested opposition figure Kizza Besigye. Besigye was reportedly arrested in Kenya on Nov. 16 and is currently in custody in Kampala. Several opposition politicians have denounced his arrest and may call for protests to demand his release. Reports indicate that some opposition members have gathered near the Makindye Court early Nov. 20, awaiting Besigye’s court appearance.
A heightened security presence will likely meet organized or spontaneous protests. Clashes are likely, as security forces will likely disperse any gathering that materializes. Localized disruptions are likely in the vicinity.
Avoid all protests. Plan for extra travel time near protest sites. If violence breaks out, leave the area immediately and take shelter in a secure, nongovernmental building. Heed instructions from authorities.
