Australia: Transport workers under Rail, Tram, and Bus Union striking in Sydney as of Dec. 21 /update 1

Transport unions holding strike in Sydney, Australia, as of Dec. 21. Significant rail disruptions reported. Protests possible.

Warning

As of Dec. 21, rail disruptions are affecting Sydney due to strike action by the Rail, Tram, and Bus Union (RBTU). Over 40 percent of the city's train services are disrupted, with cancelations and delays affecting multiple lines including T1, T2, T3 T8 lines, and the Airport Link. The action is to demand improved wages and extended train services. Further labor actions affecting additional public transport services are possible in the coming days. Strikes may be called off at short notice if negotiations suceed.

Increased congestion on alternative modes of transport is certain. High private vehicle use is likely to cause traffic congestion on main roads, particularly those heading toward Sydney's Central Business District (CBD). Union members could also stage demonstrations at transport hubs, government buildings, public squares, and on major thoroughfares. Although protests are unlikely to result in violence, localized traffic disruptions are likely during any road blockades and street marches.

Reconfirm transport reservations if operating in Sydney through the coming weeks. Seek alternative methods of transport for time-sensitive travel. Allow extra time to reach destinations due to increased traffic congestion and demand for alternative transportation. Avoid all demonstrations as a precaution. Heed all official advisories.
