Increased security likely in Tongi Township, Gazipur, Bangladesh, through late December after clashes between rival religious factions.

Warning

Increased security measures will likely continue in Tongi Township, Gazipur City, through late December following clashes between rival factions of Tablighi Jamaat, an Islamic group. The two groups clashed at Bishwa Ijtema grounds at around 03:00 Dec. 18 over control of the area for an upcoming religious gathering. At least three people were killed and 26 others injured. Authorities are implementing section 144 measures prohibiting public gatherings and rallies within a 3 km (2 mile) radius of Bishwa Ijtema grounds. Similar restrictions are also in effect in Kamarpara, Abdullahpur, Uttara Sector 10, and parts of the southern and western banks of the Turag River. Officials have deployed additional security personnel to Bishwa Ijtema grounds, Kakrail Mosque, and Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) as a precaution.

Authorities could expand security measures to other surrounding areas and may use force to disperse unruly crowds. Further clashes between members of opposing groups and police are possible. Isolated security incidents, such as arson and vandalism, may occur. Officials could impose movement restrictions, including gathering bans and curfews, in response to violence. Related demonstrations could occur, especially at Bishwa Ijtema grounds, public squares, and thoroughfares. Business and transport disruptions are possible during any further periods of unrest.

Exercise caution if operating in or near Tongi over the coming days. Avoid all demonstrations due to possible clashes. Keep away from locations where security personnel appear to be deploying, and leave the area at the first sign of any security disturbance. Allow additional travel time near gathering sites. Plan accordingly for potential localized business disruptions. Heed all official security and transport advisories.
