Belgium: Strike by unionized public sector workers to impact transport, other public services in Wallonia region Dec. 18
Unionized public sector workers to strike in Belgium's Wallonia region Dec. 18. Public transport, administration disruptions likely.
Public sector workers represented by several labor unions plan to strike across Belgium's Wallonia region on Dec. 18. The purpose of the action is to demand that management enter into talks with labor in the wake of recent budget cuts. As part of the work stoppage, strike participants will also stage a rally in the Grognon neighborhood of Namur near the Parliament of Wallonia starting at 11:30.
Unless averted, the walkout will almost certainly disrupt public administration and transport services. Regional public transport carrier Transport en Commun (TEC) expects significant disruptions to its bus and tram services during the strike; additionally, TEC offices in Florennes and Namur will remain closed on Dec. 18, as will the company's call center. Disruptions could extend into early Dec. 19.
Reconfirm business appointments with local government offices, as well as public transport schedules in the Wallonia region through at least early Dec. 19. Allow extra time for travel in the region until the announced strike ends. Avoid the related protest location in Namur as a standard security precaution.
