Chad: Tight security, political rallies, disruptions likely nationwide through at least late December ahead of the Dec. 29 legislative election

Tight security, political rallies, disruptions likely across Chad through at least late December before Dec. 29 legislative election.

Warning

Authorities will likely increase the security posture nationwide through at least late December ahead of the legislative election slated to take place Dec. 29. Large-scale political events and demonstrations are likely to occur in the days ahead as official campaigning began Dec. 7. More than 170 political parties vie for legislative, provincial, and municipal electoral seats. Chad's National Election Management Agency (ANGE) announced election results are expected on or around Feb. 3, 2025, and the event marks the first legislative election since 2011.

Demonstrations, rallies, and protests are almost certain, particularly in N'Djamena and other urban areas. To prevent violence, security force deployments will probably be exceptionally high near public squares, polling stations, and government facilities. Authorities will likely use force to disperse any protests that materialize, and clashes remain possible. Enhanced security measures may include the establishment of additional checkpoints, curfews, and vehicle travel restrictions. Other travel restrictions may be imposed with little warning, including possible border closures on election day. Disruptions to urban and intercity transport, business operations, telecommunications, internet, and social media are possible amid significant bouts of civil unrest or during preemptive security operations.

Exercise caution while operating in Chad. Avoid all gatherings, political events, and election-related activities, as well as concentrations of security forces. Exercise caution near police offices, and government buildings. If clashes break out, leave the area immediately and take shelter in a secure, nongovernmental building. Monitor local news for updates on possible enacted curfews, or for information on road conditions, as political rallies may not announce actions in advance. Heed the advice of local authorities. If encountering police checkpoints, remain polite and courteous.
