Chile: Adverse weather forecast across south-central regions through at least early Dec. 17

Severe weather forecast across south-central Chile through at least early Dec. 17. Transport, business, and utility disruptions likely.

Informational

Severe weather is forecast across parts of south-central Chile through at least early Dec. 17. Thunderstorms are expected across the region and storms may be accompanied by heavy rainfall, strong wind gusts, lightning, and hail. Heavy downpours may trigger flooding in low-lying areas and landslides on unstable slopes. Strong winds may cause property damage and power outages.

As of early Dec. 16, the Chilean Meteorological Directorate has issued the following weather warnings across the affected area:

  • Orange thunderstorm warnings (the middle level on a three-tier scale): Parts of western Araucania, central, northwestern, and western Aysen, western Los Lagos, and western Los Rios regions.

  • Yellow thunderstorm warnings: Across the rest of Los Lagos and parts of central Araucania and central Los Rios regions.

  • Yellow strong wind warnings: Parts of western Aysen region.

The National Disaster Prevention and Response Service (SENAPRED) has also issued green early warnings for thunderstorms in Araucania, Aysen, Los Lagos, and Los Rios regions. Authorities could issue new alerts or update/rescind existing advisories as weather conditions change over the coming hours and days.

Sustained heavy rainfall could trigger flooding in low-lying communities near rivers, streams, and creeks. Urban flooding is also possible in developed areas with easily overwhelmed stormwater drainage systems. Sites downstream from large reservoirs or rivers may be subject to flash flooding after relatively short periods of intense rainfall. Landslides are possible in hilly or mountainous areas, especially where heavy rain has saturated the soil.

Authorities could issue mandatory evacuation orders for flood-prone communities over the coming days. Disruptions to electricity and telecommunications services are probable where significant flooding, landslides, or strong winds impact utility networks.

Floodwaters and debris flows will likely render some bridges, rail networks, or roadways impassable, impacting overland travel in and around affected areas. Ponding on road surfaces will likely cause hazardous driving conditions on regional highways. Authorities will probably temporarily close some low-lying routes that become inundated by floodwaters. The disruptive weather may cause delays and cancellations at airports in the affected regions. Flooding could block regional rail lines; freight cancellations are possible in areas with heavy rainfall and potential track blockages.

Localized business disruptions are probable in areas impacted by severe weather; some businesses might not operate at full capacity because of damage to facilities, possible evacuations, and some employees' inability to reach work sites.

Monitor local media for weather-related updates and advisories. Confirm all transport reservations and business arrangements before traveling in the affected area. Seek updated information on road conditions before driving or routing shipments through areas where severe weather is forecast; plan for possible supply chain disruptions throughout the affected areas. Stay away from elevated streams, creeks, and other watercourses that are prone to flash flooding. Do not attempt to navigate flooded roadways. Exercise caution in elevated terrain due to the threat of landslides. Charge battery-powered devices in the case of prolonged electricity outages.
