Emergency crews are responding to a bushfire in Tai Tong, Yuen Long District, Hong Kong, as of the afternoon of Dec. 29. The blaze, which began Dec. 28, was reportedly caused by wild grass catching fire and has been burning for over 20 hours. The Government Flying Service has deployed a helicopter to assist with firefighting efforts. Although there have been no reported casualties, the fire has generated large amounts of smoke. Authorities have advised the public to avoid the area.
Bushfires can lead to evacuations, road closures, and ground transport diversions. Depending on the progression of the bushfires, the status of roads could change over the coming hours and days. Low visibility from smoke and possible ashfall could contribute to traffic delays in the affected area.
Smoke from fires is a mixture of gases and fine particles from burning trees, plants, and possibly building materials. Such smoke can hurt the eyes, irritate the respiratory system, and worsen chronic heart and lung diseases. Smoke may also worsen symptoms for people who have pre-existing respiratory conditions, such as allergies, asthma, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).
Seek updated information on road conditions if driving in the affected area; road closures and detours will cause increased congestion and delays. Individuals with chronic respiratory illnesses may be more susceptible to the negative effects of smoke inhalation. Eye irritation is possible; flush irritated eyes with copious amounts of clean water.
