Czech Republic: Adverse winter weather forecast across much of the country Dec. 6

Adverse winter weather forecast across much of the Czech Republic Dec. 6. Hazardous travel conditions likely.

Warning

Adverse winter weather conditions are forecast across much of the Czech Republic Dec. 6. A mix of snow, sleet, and rain is expected across the country, with the heaviest snowfall likely in elevated areas. A drop in temperatures will also lead to icy conditions in many areas. Hazardous travel conditions are likely due to reduced visibility and slippery roads. Sporadic power outages are possible throughout the affected area.

The Czech Hydrometeorological Institute (CHMI) has issued the following weather warnings across the country Dec. 6:

  • Orange heavy snowfall warnings (the middle on a three-tier scale): Across Vysocina and Zlin, much of Olomouc, and parts of eastern and northern Hradec Kralove, central, eastern, and northern Liberec, northwestern and western Moravian-Silesian, central, eastern, and southern Pardubice, and central and northern South Moravian regions.

  • Yellow heavy snowfall warnings: The rest of Hradec Kralove, Liberec, Olomouc, and South Moravian and parts of far northeastern Central Bohemian, central, eastern, and northern Karlovy Vary, central, northern, and southern Moravian-Silesian, central and western Pardubice, southern Plzen, southern and western South Bohemian, and northern Usti nad Labem regions.

  • Yellow ice warnings: Across Karlovy Vary, much of South Bohemian, and parts of southern and western Plzen, southwestern South Moravian, northern Usti nad Labem, and central, southern, and western Vysocina regions.

Officials will likely update and possibly extend the coverage of weather alerts over the coming days.

The winter weather will likely cause ground and air transport disruptions in the region over the coming days. Traffic and commercial trucking delays are possible along regional highways. Difficult and potentially dangerous driving conditions are also likely on secondary and rural roadways in the affected states as maintenance crews prioritize clearing major routes. Authorities could close stretches of highway if driving conditions become too hazardous. Gusty winds may threaten to topple high-profile vehicles throughout the affected area. Flight delays and cancellations are likely due to ground stops and deicing operations at regional airports.

Monitor local media for updated weather information. Verify road conditions before driving in areas where heavy snowfall or ice is forecast. Allow extra time to reach destinations in these areas and carry an emergency kit and warm clothes if driving is necessary, especially on secondary or rural routes that could become impassable. Plan accordingly for delivery delays if routing shipments by truck through the affected area. Confirm flights. Charge battery-powered devices in the case of prolonged electricity outages.
