Doctors plan sit-in demonstrations at Dorina Crossing in Kolkata, India, Dec. 17-26. Heightened security, localized disruptions likely.

Warning

Members of the West Bengal Joint Platform of Doctors (WBJPD) plan to hold a sit-in demonstration at Dorina Crossing in Kolkata, West Bengal State, Dec. 17-26. Participants are denouncing the Central Bureau of Investigation's (CBI) handling of the alleged sexual assault and murder of a female resident doctor at R.G. Kar Medical College on Aug. 9, particularly after officials granted bail to two suspects in the case. Hundreds to thousands of people could attend the event.

Additional gatherings, including marches and sit-ins, may occur in other parts of Kolkata in the coming days. Potential protest sites include medical colleges, public healthcare institutions, government buildings, law enforcement facilities like police stations and CBI offices, as well as public squares and major thoroughfares. In Kolkata, other possible gathering locations include Kolkata Police Headquarters, RG Kar Hospital, the West Bengal Chief Minister's office at Nabanna Bhavan, Shyambazar, and Swasthya Bhawan.

Heightened security measures are likely at Dorina Crossing and at other protests that materialize. Localized transport disruptions are likely, particularly if demonstrators block roadways. Authorities may use force, including water cannons and tear gas, to disperse crowds if they are unruly or attempt to breach security cordons. Depending on operational needs, officials may implement enhanced restrictions, including public gathering bans. Clashes between police and activists are possible. Isolated security incidents, including arson and vandalism, cannot be ruled out. Associated business disruptions are possible.

Avoid all demonstrations as a precaution. Do not navigate roadblocks, as protesters may react violently. Depart the area at the first sign of any security disturbance. Plan accordingly for localized transport disruptions. Heed all official transport and security advisories.
