Farmers' protests likely in northern India through at least late December. Increased security, disruptions likely.
Unionized farmers will likely continue to protest in northern India through late December to demand better government aid for land acquisitions and market compensation, among other issues. In recent weeks, the Samyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM), a coalition of farmers' unions, continue to hold demonstrations at the Shambhu and Khanauri borders in Punjab State. Farmers also held a rail blockade in Punjab Dec. 18, causing train service disruptions statewide. In New Delhi, related gatherings have taken place at Jantar Mantar and Ramlila Ground. Occasional clashes between activists and law enforcement officials have occurred, with police using tear gas and water cannon to disperse crowds. The SKM has called for a shutdown strike in Punjab State Dec. 30.
Additional demonstrations of various types, including marches and road blockades, are likely over the coming weeks. Potential gathering sites include lawmakers' offices and residences, government buildings, public squares, transportation hubs, and thoroughfares, including interstate highways. Well-attended gatherings could attract thousands of participants.
